FAQ for XTAR D30 4000 Dive Light

CRI (Color Rendering Index) measures how accurately a light source reveals the true colors of objects compared to natural daylight. The D30 4000 achieves high CRI through 9 dedicated LEDs, ensuring reds, oranges, and purples—colors that water rapidly absorbs—appear vivid and natural in photographs and video. Low-CRI lights (CRI < 80) produce muddy, green-shifted footage that requires extensive post-processing correction. For professional underwater imaging where color accuracy directly impacts deliverable quality, CRI>90 is essential.

Red light: Used for shy subjects (pygmy seahorses, octopuses) that are less startled by long wavelengths. Also serves as a focus assist without triggering light-sensitive behaviors. Blue light: Enhances contrast in tropical blue-water environments and can be used for artistic color effects in video. UV (Ultraviolet): Excites fluorescence in corals, anemones, and certain fish species, creating dramatic images impossible with white light alone. The UV mode requires a yellow barrier filter on the camera lens to block reflected UV and capture only the fluorescence emission.

The D30 4000 is powered by four 18650 Li-ion batteries (not included), providing approximately 2.5 hours runtime at maximum 4000-lumen output. Using lower power modes or single-color channels extends runtime significantly. For production shoots, we recommend carrying 2–3 sets of charged batteries and a multi-bay charger. XTAR offers compatible 18650 batteries and chargers optimized for high-drain dive light applications.

Yes. The D30 4000 features standard 1/4-inch ball mounts on backpack faces, enabling integration with Nauticam, Aquatica, Sea&Sea, Inon, and other major underwater camera rig systems. The 100° beam angle provides wide coverage for full-frame camera lenses without vignetting. For macro work, the light can be positioned close to the port using short arms; for wide-angle, longer arms create even illumination across the frame. The compact cylindrical body reduces drag and improves trim when mounted on camera sleds.

The D30 4000 is fully functional for snorkeling, freediving, and surface swimming. Its 100° beam angle illuminates wide reef scenes from the surface, and the red mode is particularly effective for approaching shy reef fish in shallow water without startling them. The 100-meter depth rating exceeds freediving depths, and the sealed battery compartment prevents flooding even during dynamic surface entries. However, the four-battery configuration adds bulk compared to compact travel lights—snorkelers prioritizing minimal gear may prefer the D30 1600 or D40 ZOOM.

The D30 6000 offers 50% more output (6000 vs 4000 lumens), a wider 140° beam angle (vs 100°), and CRI>90 certification (vs high CRI on D30 4000). For professional cinematography requiring 4K/8K capture in low ambient light, the D30 6000's additional output and wider coverage reduce noise in camera sensors. The D30 4000 provides excellent performance for 1080p and standard 4K work, photography. Both share the same 4×18650 battery architecture and mounting systems.
